Obio/Akpor LG Chairman Bans Okada Operation

The Obio/Akpor Local Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, for passenger transportation across the local government area, effective Saturday, August 1, 2026.

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Gift Worlu, announced this on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the Rumuodomaya, headquarters of the LGA.

He said the decision is aimed at strengthening security, improving public order, reducing road accidents, and promoting a safer and more organised transport system within the local government.

According to the statement, the Chairman expressed concerns over traffic management, public safety, and the alleged involvement of some commercial motorcycle operators in criminal activities informed the decision.

The directive prohibits all commercial motorcycles from conveying passengers within Obio/Akpor from the effective date. However, the council clarified that private motorcycle owners can continue to use their motorcycles for personal purposes in line with existing laws.

The exemption also covers approved dispatch riders, licensed courier and logistics operators, emergency responders, and security agencies carrying out official duties. The council said enforcement of the ban will be carried out in collaboration with relevant security agencies and authorized council officials.

Commercial motorcycle operators have been advised to use the period before July 31, 2026, to make alternative arrangements and comply with the directive.
The council also directed its Information and Public Relations Unit to intensify public sensitisation ahead of the implementation date.

Worlu, appealed to residents to support the policy, describing it as part of efforts to make Obio/Akpor safer, cleaner, and more prosperous.
