The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the recently concluded election that ushered in a new leadership for the Rivers State Chapter of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) as “a credible and crisis-free process”.
Chairman of the NUJ in Rivers State, Stanley Job gave this commendation on Thursday, February 18, 2021, in an interview with Kristina Reports shortly after the elections at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
He praised the peaceful conduct of the NAWOJians during the process, noting that their comportment and maturity ensured the elections was peaceful, free and credible.
The Rivers State Chapter of NAWOJ had on Thursday, February 18, 2021, elected Serekara-Nwikhana and nine others as her new executive to pilot its affairs for the next three years. The event as well doubled as the Association’s 7th Triennial Delegates Conference.
Susan Serekara-Nwikhana emerged as Chairperson after scoring 92 votes to beat her co-contestant, Joy Grant-Amadi, who polled 46 votes, in the keenly contested election, which held at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre (NUJ Secretariat) in Port Harcourt.
For the position of Vice Chairperson, Daba Benebo emerged winner after polling 75 votes to defeat her fellow contestant, Sele Aso, who scored 61 votes.
The positions of Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Treasurer went to Doris Morrison, Ngozi Anosike, and Beauty Nteugot, respectively, who were returned unopposed.
Vice President (Zone F) of NAWOJ, Uduak Obeten-Okon, who also served as the Returning Officer for the election, thanked the NAWOJians for their peaceful conduct during and after the polls, urging them to work in synergy with the newly elected leadership to achieve set objectives while furthering the interests of women journalists in the state.
The newly elected executive of NAWOJ Rivers State chapter were immediately sworn into office and went ahead to preside over the triennial delegates conference.
The Rivers State NUJ Chairman advised the new executive to prioritize the welfare of members in its agenda.
