The delivery timeline of the Train 7 project of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) has suffered yet again a major setback as Finima Community shutdown the site early morning on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
The Train 7 site has Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited, Daewoo Engineering and Construction Nigeria Limited, and Cico Construction and Leasing Company handling different aspects of the project.
The protesters, who accused Saipem and Daewoo of neglect and marginalization in the ongoing Train 7 project, which owner, the NLNG said it was 65% completed, blocked the H Block entrance into the project site with palm fronds and other fetish items.
The two companies are subcontractors to the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor to the NLNG, SCD JV (Saipem, Chiyoda and Daewoo Joint Venture).
Youths of Finima Community defied the early morning heavy downpour, which continued until late afternoon, to barricade the H Block gate, preventing entry and exit of staff.
Some of the demands of the protesters include implementation of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act 2010 and its Community Content Guideline (CCG) 2017, which outlined the inclusion of host communities in the project.
They also demanded that the companies develop and implement a training programme for 170 youths od Finima, stop marginalizing their kinsmen by placing them on redundancy while others remain on the train 7
Construction project, as well as provide the approved vendors list of Finima Community.
Additionally, they also demanded that both companies respect the leadership of Finima Community by honouring invitations from them, instruct their sub-contractors to employ from Finima interface officers and
other positions, and participate in the infrastructural and human capacity development of the community.
Also, the demands included recognizing Finima Community as host of the project and according it priority and greater participation in the Train 7 construction activities, and oblige the community by signing a memorandum of agreement with it.
