NAWOJ Elections: Group Seeks Support, Pledge Stoppage of Street Hawking By School Age Girls

As the momentum for who becomes the next Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter thickens, frontline Chairmanship aspirant, Joy Grant-Amadi has assured that her administration if elected will focus on stopping the menace of street hawking by girls that are of school age.

Grant-Amadi made this assertion when she led members of her campaign team and fellow aspirants on a familiarization visit to Kristina Reports Chapel in Port Harcourt, on Thursday, January 21, 2021.

While commending the NAWOJIANS at Kristina Reports Chapel for the audience granted them, Grant-Amadi expressed satisfaction towards the professionalism and team spirit in the medium.

She urged the NAWOJians to be steadfast in their commitment to NAWOJ, explaining that the purpose of her visit was to formally inform the Chapel of her intention to run for chairperson in the forthcoming NAWOJ elections as well as introduce the various ambitions of her team members.

She explained that “the need to enhance professionalism among female journalists and to ameliorate issues affecting women and children are some of my passions. My watchword cuts across Inclusiveness, innovation and advancement.”

Grant-Amadi added that she intends to follow in the footsteps of her predecessor, the outgone state chairperson, Lilian Okonkwo, who is the current Deputy National President of NAWOJ.

She assured about her plans on the development of the girl-child who is often subjected to abuses such as street hawking, molestation, and deprivation, amongst others.

“We are promising of improved welfare for female journalists, the destitute, the less privileged, the depraved and the deprived through being their advocate, their voice so they can be heard, through mentoring and training workshops not only financial grants.”

Also speaking, NAWOJ Vice Chairmanship aspirant, Sele Aso encouraged female Journalists to shun bitterness, gossip, mudslinging and character assassination in its entirety, stressing that unity is better off, given that the election was amongst professionals.

Adding her voice to the call for commitment, Beauty Nteugot, a NAWOJ State Treasurer aspirant assured Kristina Reports Chapel of her readiness to assist younger female journalists whenever such need arises, provided it will further the cause of Journalism and growth.

Responding, Coordinator of NAWOJ in the Kristina Reports Chapel, Deborah Ibaningo commended the Grant-Amadi led campaign team, which she reckoned as older NAWOJians for placing value on the young chapel, urging the campaigners to stand by their promises and not shut the door on members’ faces after the elections are decided.

Ibaningo added that the professionalism of the Chapel was borne out of the drive of its publisher, Godswill Jumbo, and it was not ready to trade the cutting edge advantage for anything.

She promised of the Chapel’s commitment on affairs of NAWOJ while wishing them goodluck in their electioneering endeavours.

The NAWOJ election is a Triennial Delegate Conference that grants female journalists the opportunity to exercise their franchise, thereby producing those that would pilot their affairs while protecting the interests of not just female journalists but the girl-child.
