Lockdown: NLNG, Shell Donate N100m worth of Palliatives to Bonny Community

In a bid to cushion the effects of the lockdown imposed on Bonny Local Government Area by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, the Nigeria LNG (NLNG) Limited, in conjunction with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), has donated food palliatives valued at over N100m to Bonny Community.

The NLNG/SPDC food palliatives for Bonny Community comprise 1,200 bags of Rice, 1,200 bags of Beans, 1,200 bags of Garri, 1,200 cartons of vegetables oil and 1,200 cartons of Indomie noodles.

Some of the food items jointly provided by the Rivers State Government, Nigeria LNG and Shell stacked up at the Ibanise Hall, Akiama, Bonny.

According to a statement by Nigeria LNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Eyono Fatayi-Williams, and made available to Kristina Reports, the gesture by the oil and gas companies operating on the Island follows the surge of Coronavirus infections which prompted the Rivers State Government’s lockdown order on Bonny LGA.

Wike had, on Sunday, June 21, 2020, announced the lockdown of Bonny LGA in a bid to stem the increasing community spread of the coronavirus on the Island, after concerted engagements with critical stakeholders including the Amanyanabo of Grand Bonny Kingdom, King Edward Asimini Willian-Dappa Pepple III, Perekule XI; the Local Government Chairman; officials of the State Ministry of Health and the Oil and Gas companies operating on the Island – NLNG, SPDC and Exxon Mobil.

At the meeting of the Governor with these stakeholders, the oil and gas companies committed to provide food palliatives to cushion the economic effect of the lockdown on residents of the Island.

In response to the current global focus on the fight against Coronavirus, NLNG has spent over N1.4b on health facilities upgrade and supplies of sundry consumables.

NLNG supported the Rivers State Government with the provision of two pickup trucks, medical equipment, PPEs, consumables and upgrade of facilities at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital valued at N630m.

The company also spent N380m to support Bonny Island, its host community with the provision of a 24-bed Covid-19 treatment centre, medical consumables, PPEs and food palliatives

Under the NNPC-led Oil and Gas Industry COVID-19 Intervention, the company has committed N450m to support the Federal Government to upgrade facilities at the Federal Medical Centre Yola at N180m and donate medical equipment, PPEs and consumables worth N108m to Lagos Mainland Hospital, as well as donating medical equipment, PPEs and consumables to Akwa Ibom, Edo, Adamawa and Bayelsa States at N54m for each of the states.

To boost the health and well-being of people in its host community, NLNG recently launched the Bonny Health Community Insurance Scheme (BHCIS to ensure affordable healthcare for the people on the Island.

Reacting to the delivery of the food palliatives to the Bonny Community on Thursday, July 2, 2020, representative of the Bonny Chiefs’ Council (BCC), Chief Abel Attoni praised the effort of NLNG and SPDC “for this unique, exceptional and timely intervention at the moment of need”.
