Though compliance levels to the lockdown on Bonny Local Government Area has been high, the sparse incidences of violations have not been addressed fully according to the provisions of the law due to the absence of a Mobile Court in Bonny.

These violations include an alleged attempt by one of the residents (names withheld) to disarm a naval rating attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Nigerian Navy, Bonny at Akiama Community in Bonny LGA, resulting in injury to the said naval personnel on Monday, June 22, 2020, which was Day 2 of the lockdown.

Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bonny, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Shu’aib Achigili told Kristina Reports that modalities were being worked out to establish a mobile court to prosecute those violating the lockdown.

He said that, in the light of this development, the security agencies enforcing the lockdown in Bonny are challenged with managing the violators of the lockdown order by the Governor.

The Police Chief stated that hence the Nigeria Police were forced to release the detained offenders at the close of work on a daily basis, noting that though compliance was near 100%, there were a few situations which needed the offenders to be prosecuted according to the provisions of the Executive Order on the COVID-19 Lockdown by the State Government.

CSP Shu’Aib Achigili further revealed that the security agencies have been working in synergy to effectively manage the lockdown, noting that the compliance level was good so far.

According to him, the strategic plan for managing the lockdown has been very successful so far as there were very few and negligible incidents of violations.

He advised residents to continue abiding by the regulations put in place, saying it was for their own good.

Across the LGA, few incidents have been reported where some individuals were said to have violated the lockdown including the incident at Akiama Community where a resident (names withheld) was said to have been apprehended for attempting to disarm a naval rating.

Eyewitness accounts have it that trouble started when the said suspect was accosted by the naval ratings manning the checkpoint at Akiama Junction, only for him to claim that he was going to collect a phone charger, an act, which was said to be in clear violation of the lockdown order.

Kristina Reports learnt that the alleged attempt to disarm the said soldier resulted in a skirmish, as the security personnel had to handcuff and detain him before the officials of the COVID-19 taskforce came and intervened on his behalf before he was released to go home.

In another incident, some individuals were arrested playing football on the street and later released with a stern warning to stay off the roads.

In yet another incident, a woman was apprehended by the law enforcement agencies for violating the lockdown but when she pleaded that she was on her way to purchase food from her customer who lives nearby for her starving children, she was accorded a discretionary release based on her situation.

Your news about the Akiama skirmish is very false. Why won’t you peddle the news as it is? Why tell half truths? You are supposed to be a voice of truth. If you cannot report the truth, then don’t report at all. This is very misleading. How can you say the naval officer was injured, why will you leave out the part were the abused young man was asked to lie in filthy water for 3 hours. Did your eyewitness not tell you that? You people are just injurious to the society.
