The Nigerian Army says information sharing amongst critical stakeholders is key to the fight against criminality in the Niger Delta region.

The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, South-South, also known as Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Jamal Abdussalam said this on Thursday, September 7, 2023 when the Oil Producing Companies Committee Security Group (OPCC) visited him at his office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

A statement by the acting Deputy Director, 6 Division, Army Public Relations, Major Danjuma Danjuma said the GOC stressed that information sharing is a veritable tool capable of finding a lasting solution to security challenges bedeviling oil companies in the region.

He urged the OPCC to resuscitate its activities, as this has huge potentials for security and, indeed, stability in the oil and gas industry, pointing out that the existence of the group will close existing gaps amongst concerned stakeholders in the oil and gas sector.

Major General Abdussalam harped on the need for continuous working relationship with the group, reassuring of the Division’s support, adding that the Division would have a focal person responsible for sustained interface with group in order to guarantee free flow of information.

The OPCC Team Lead, Abiodun Oderinde informed the GOC that the group was at the Division to intimate him of its existence since the late 1990s, further informing that it has been a medium through which security components of oil producing companies share ideas in solving security challenges facing them.

Abiodun said that they were essentially out to create more awareness of the group’s existence, adding that this will place the group on a trajectory to realise its objectives.

He appealed to the GOC that the Division should not relent in providing security guidance when necessary, while also soliciting for support, particularly in hosting their meetings in facilities in Bori Camp, Port Harcourt.
