The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to sachet water distributors, both retail and wholesale, in Bayelsa State to review their prices downward as it is astronomically high.
The ultimatum was issued on Sunday, February 4, 2024 by the Chairman, Central Zone of the IYC, Peres Ineife via a statement he personally signed and made available to Kristina Reports in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
“The Ijaw Youth Council Central Zone is issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to producers and wholesalers to review their prices as every means to meet with the Association of Table Water Producers Bayelsa State Chapter has been abortive as they have bluntly refused to give room for peaceful engagement.”
The statement informed that the hike in prices is causing significant hardship in the state, causing the people a health risk resorting to other options.
The IYC expressed concern over the refusal of the State chapter of the Water Producers Association of Nigeria to meet with the body, accusing it of having ulterior motives which include deepening the hardship faced by residents of the State.
The Council noted they had earlier stopped distribution from outskirt of the state in order for those within the locality to boost production and sales.
The Ijaw Youths Council warned that failure to comply with the ultimatum will leave them with no other choice than to execute its motto; “By Any Means Necessary” on facilities that neglect the wellbeing and choose to take advantage of our people”.
Efforts by Kristina Reports to reach the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Water Producers Association of Nigeria was yet unsuccessful as at the time of this report.
