Social media went agog as Nba star/ Milwaukee Bucks player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, often known as the Greek god was spotted in Lagos, Nigeria, for the Youth Alive Basketball Competition taking place at Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba.
The Greek-Nigerian, Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo (Adétòkunbọ̀) was born in Athens to Nigerian parents and has not shyed away from his African roots. In videos circulated on social media, Giannis was seen playing basketball with the youths who were thrilled by his presence.
The Youth Alive Basketball Competition is a youth-focused basketball programme, spearheaded by Gbade Olatona, a former Technical Director of the Lagos State Basketball Association. He stated in previous editions that the purpose of the competition is to keep contributing his quota to basketball development in Nigeria in general and Lagos State in particular.
According to the commentator, Ajowele Abayomi, the kids thought him mad when he urged them to wait for a couple more minutes for the arrival of the star.
The grand finale of the Youth Alive championship will hold on Saturday 29 July with Giannis expected to be in attendance.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is an NBA champion, winning with Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, he was also the NBA Finals MVP. Giannis is a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (2019, 2020) and a seven-time NBA All-Star (2017–2023).
Giannis’s size, speed, strength, and ball-handling skills saw him the nickname “Greek Freak” which gradually became “Greek God” He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as a first round, 15th overall pick in 2013.
