Genevieve Nnaji Makes Surprise Comeback With New BBC Thriller Series

After years away from major screen appearances, Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is stepping back into the spotlight with a leading role in Wahala, an upcoming British-Nigerian drama series backed by BBC Studios.

The new television project, already generating buzz among fans of African cinema and diaspora storytelling, will premiere on BBC One and stream via BBC iPlayer.

Rather than a typical Nollywood production, Wahala dives into the complicated lives of four Nigerian-British women living in London.

The series blends friendship, ambition, romance and hidden betrayal into what producers describe as an emotionally layered thriller.

Nnaji joins a cast that includes Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma, Adelayo Adedayo and Deborah Ayorinde.

The drama is adapted from the bestselling novel Wahala written by Nikki May, while the screen adaptation is handled by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko.

Industry observers see the project as another major international bridge between Nollywood talent and mainstream global television, especially as African stories continue gaining wider recognition across streaming platforms.

Nnaji’s return is particularly significant because the actress has largely remained out of the public eye since the success of Lionheart, the acclaimed Netflix-backed film that marked her directorial debut and helped expand Nollywood’s international reach.

Speaking about the new role, the actress described the production as exciting and praised the creative team behind it.

The title Wahala, a popular Nigerian Pidgin word meaning “trouble” hints at the tension, secrets and emotional conflicts expected to drive the series.

The project is being developed by Firebird Pictures under BBC Studios, with filming expected to further spotlight contemporary African and diaspora experiences for a global audience.
