Three students (names withheld) risk being expelled from the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt for their roles in the gang rape of their female colleagues.
Kristina Reports learnt that the alleged incidents happened at Hostel C in the University’s main campus at Rumuolumeni.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele told Kristina Reports that two of the three suspects have been arrested by the Police while one was still at large.
He further informed that in keeping with the stance of the Visitor of the school and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, and the management’s zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment, the University has shut down the affected hostel and the matter referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and appropriate sanctions on the affected students.
“Yes. Two out of three have been arrested and handed over to the police. The University has driven away the occupants of the room where it occurred. The matter has also been referred to Students Disciplinary Committee to investigate.”
The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Police warned students to beware of the crime scene, Hostel C, describing the place as being “notorious for rape and assault of women”.
Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Nnamdi Omoni further revealed that after interrogating the suspects and the victim, it was clear that the female students were gang raped by their male colleagues.
SP Omoni added that the suspected rapists dug holes in the walls of their hostel rooms to watch while their colleagues raped the girls.
Also speaking on the matter, an activist, Prince Wiro declared that he and his fellow activists will see to it that justice is served in the matter.
He commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, and the President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Destiny Omunakwe for their roles in ensuring the arrest of two of the suspects and handing them over to the Police.
He urged the Nigeria Police and other stakeholders to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out on the matter and anyone found culpable is made to face the law, urging students of the institution to focus on their studies and shun acts inimical to their academic progress and the wellbeing of society at large.
