Residents of Bonny Island are upbeat as reconstruction work begins on the Akiama Bridge almost a year after it collapsed.
A fact-finding visit by Kristina Reports to the site of the bridge revealed ongoing work by Evomec Global Services Limited, a construction firm.
A source within the Bonny Local Government Council, who preferred anonymity, hinted Kristina Reports that the company deployed to site after talks were concluded between the LG Council and the company.
At the project site, work was ongoing to excavate the top soil which is not adequate to sustain the strength of bridge.
Residents of the area commended the Chairman of Bonny LGA, Anengi Claude-Wilcox for her thoughtfulness, expressing the hope that given its antecedents, Evomec will deliver a good job.
A resident, who only identified herself as Atonye, said “she has tried for us; seeing Evomeon site, I felt so happy because they always do a good job”.
One of the workers told Kristina Reports on condition of anonymity that “the rebuilding process will be thorough. The ground preparation is on now, we’re excavating the canal and the top soil around it”.
“The foundation will be consistent with our quality assurance standards so that when completed the bridge’s lifespan will be a sustainable.”
A security personnel, who preferred anonymity, told Kristina Reports that “we’re happy about this development because we won’t be going round the long route before we get to our base”.
The kick-start of the reconstruction work is in fulfillment of the assurance by Dame Claude-Wilcox to not only rebuild the bridge but ensure it is sustainable and sturdy to handle the traffic in that axis of the island.
