It was an emotion-laden atmosphere for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Etinan Local Government Area as the council chairman, Uko Umoh, treated them to Easter fiesta at the Council Hall.
The event, which took place on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 also featured the giving out of wheelchairs, armpit clutches, white cane, POS machines and business grants to them.
The Chairman, while addressing a cross section of PWDs harped on love, unity and understanding.
Umoh assured PWDs of continuous assistance and promised to lend part of his monthly salary for their upkeep saying he is chairman by the grace of God.
He stressed that Etinan Local Government is owned by all maintaining that the transition committee is only here to implement government policies and assist all irrespective of social class or status in the society.
“Let me advise you to always heed to government directives. Today those whose names are in the social registers will benefit from the flag off of Bulk Purchase Programme. You must understand we all love you and we will be there for you at all times.”
Earlier in his remark, the Personal Assistant to Governor on Disability, Ubong Ikpe commended the chairman for such gesture.
He revealed that for 15 years since he had accident, there had never been any assistance for Persons with Disabilities from the council and noted that the people are happy with the chairman.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the LGA, Imaobong Michael described Uko Umoh as a man with child-like heart.
She hailed the chairman for the assistance and described herself as the most fortunate Vice Chairman in the state to work with a man with a heart of gold.
“I am the most fortunate Vice Chairman in Akwa Ibom State because God has given me a man with a heart of gold. My chairman has a child-like heart and we work here as family. My chairman is doing this not because he has so much but because he has a heart of gold.”
The highpoint of the meeting was presentation of Merit Award to Chairman for his unprecedented supports to PWDs in Etinan.
Reacting to the gesture, one of the beneficiaries who received wheelchair, said for 44 years since he was born, he has never been given a wheelchair.
He applauded the Chairman and prayed God to reward him abundantly.
