Embrace Professionalism, Tenets of Journalism – NUJ

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has charged Media practitioners to embrace professionalism and adhere to the standard of journalism practice as applicable in Nigeria.

Chairman of the NUJ Rivers State Council, Stanley Job Stanley gave this charge on Monday, September 18, 2023 at the 2nd Inauguration of the Gist Newspaper and Magazine Chapel of the NUJ in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Maintaining that journalism has no room for mediocrity, hence members must be embrace professionalism in all spheres, and do more to mainstream the finer values of the profession and value addition.

“In line with the practice, Nigerian journalists are always proactive when it comes to information dissemination to the general public. Be, therefore, encouraged to do the needful and be up and doing.”

Also speaking, Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Susan Serekara-Nwikhana called on female members of the NUJ Gist Newspaper & Magazine Chapel to identify with NAWOJ in the State, noting that NUJ remains the parent body.

She eulogized the efforts of the Publisher of Gist Newspaper & Magazine, Sotonye Toby Fulton, in ensuring that media organization re-integrated into the Media space and maintaining optimum standard in its service offerings.

Responding, Chairman of the newly inaugurated NUJ Gist Newspaper & Magazine Chapel, Amaike Okoronkwo thanked the leadership and members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Rivers State Council for honouring the inauguration.

He appealed to the State Executive Council (SEC) of the NUJ Rivers State Council to oblige his Chapel assistance anytime she comes calling, assuring that such support, which he described as “invaluable”, will make the Chapel move ahead.

“I want to thank our Chairman here, Mr. Stanley Job Stanley, on behalf of the SEC for this 2nd inauguration. I will assure you that we are ready to run properly as a chapel but would want you as the state chairman to always come to our aid anytime we call on you for such assistance.”

“We are not coming back to join any queue but to as a chapel that was on ground, we are back to lead in the areas peculiar to our reading audience in line with journalism practice.”

The Gist Newspaper and Magazine Chapel is a Port Harcourt based news medium focused on news dissemination, events profiling, public relations management and social advocacy, with Opobo, Rivers State born Sotonye Toby Fulton as Publisher and Chief Executive Officer.
