Desmond Elliot Admits Signing Impeachment Document by Mistake

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot has clarified his involvement in the controversial Lagos State House of Assembly impeachment crisis, admitting that he signed an impeachment-related document during the political turmoil but insisting it was done out of confusion.

The controversy, which has continued to resurface in public discussions as of Tuesday, May 19, 2026, stems from the 2025 Lagos Assembly leadership crisis, where former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed and later reinstated following a heated political standoff.

In January 2025, lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly moved against then-Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, resulting in his impeachment and the brief emergence of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker.

During the process, several lawmakers reportedly signed impeachment documents that contributed to Obasa’s removal, a move that later triggered political backlash and federal-level intervention.

Obasa was eventually reinstated after what was widely reported as presidential clarification and political mediation within the ruling party.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Elliot said he was not fully aware of the implications of the document he signed at the time.

He stated: “I was also as confused as everybody was… and pretty much we thought it was from the presidency.”

“And of course, I appended my own signature.”

Elliot added that the confusion surrounding the impeachment process influenced his decision, as many lawmakers believed the action had federal backing.

According to Elliot, lawmakers were operating under the belief that the impeachment had approval from higher authorities, a perception that later proved incorrect after clarification from the presidency.

He maintained that he was not physically present for parts of the process and only fully understood the situation after events had escalated.

Following the controversy, Elliot publicly apologised to his political mentor, former House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, acknowledging the tension his involvement may have caused.

He said: “I’m sorry, my daddy, if I have offended you in any way.”

The apology was widely interpreted as an attempt to ease political tension within the ruling party after the impeachment saga created internal friction.

Gbajabiamila later suggested that Elliot’s involvement in the impeachment process nearly affected his political standing, intensifying public attention on the matter.

Elliot’s admission that he signed an impeachment-related document “by mistake” has reignited debate over the Lagos Assembly crisis, highlighting issues of political misunderstanding, party loyalty, and legislative decision-making under pressure.

While he insists his action was based on confusion rather than intent, the episode continues to draw public and political scrutiny as it resurfaces in 2026 discussions.
