The federal government-owned television station, Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) via a post on X, announced the broadcast of the 2023 AFCON after a memorandum of understanding was signed with AfroSports TV, a cross-continental Free-To-Air sports channel.
“NTA signs a memorandum of understanding with Afro Sports TV for transmission of 52 games of African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire,” the post read.
This announcement comes a few weeks after MultiChoice, a South African company that operates DStv, a major satellite television service in Nigeria broke the hearts of Nigerians by failing to acquire the broadcasting rights for the AFCON billed to hold Ivory Coast.
The failure to broadcast the AFCON was a result of Multichoice being beaten to the broadcasting rights by New World TV, a Togolese audio-visual group.
New World TV had won the rights to broadcast all CAF’s 13 competitions to the sub-Saharan African audience for two years.
The 34th edition of the AFCON will be held in Ivory Coast from Saturday, January 13 to Sunday, February 11, 2024, and Nigeria will be looking to grab a fourth title.
