In furtherance of its commitment to the educational development of children in its operational environment, one of the contractors on the NLNG Train 7 project, China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd has donated educational materials to St. Michael’s CAC Primary School, Bonny.
The educational materials include exercise books, school bags, pencils and crayons, amongst others.
Reacting to the gesture, Head Mistress of the school located in Bonny, Rivers State, Patience Pepple expressed her appreciation to the company for the donation, saying it aligns with the expectations of the teachers and pupils, urging other corporate bodies to emulate the gesture.
“I am very, very happy. My teachers and I are happy and we say God Almighty should bless them. Yes, if other companies can do this, I will be happy. Some of the issues we have is lack of teachers and lack of desks.”
On his part, an official of China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, Liu Lanpeng said the gesture was predicated on the corporate policy thrust of the company to always contribute to the development of education and social impact where business takes it.
“When China Harbour goes anywhere we find some chance to contribute to the area where we are.
“So, we think it’s good to give items to the kids. My company believes in education. We hope that everyone can be educated and we will try our best to do more of this.”
In the company’s delegation were other officials, Li Tiantian, Feng Haifang, Chen Zhongwei, Zhang Yuxin, Wei Rongtun, Wang Ruize and Wang Die.
In an interview with Kristina Reports, Community Relations Manager of China Harbour, Emmanuel Finecountry said the company has a world vision of everyone being educated, explaining that his firm believes education would make the world a better place.
“China Harbour is hell-bent in seeing that everybody in the world is educated because if everybody is educated, to an extent the world will be a better place for our existence and that is why they have decided to do this to promote education.”
One of the teachers in the school, Margaret Jumbo expressed delight over the gesture by the company, commending the company and urging the State Commissioner for Education to come to the aid of the school as it lacks several amenities and teaching aids.
“We’re happy, we are surprised; we never knew these people were coming. So, when we saw them we were very happy and surprised.
“A lot of children don’t have books or writing materials so we are very happy to see what they have brought. Other companies should emulate this.
“Also the Commissioner should come and help us. We don’t have teachers in the school in the school and we would appreciate if that is looked into.”
On her part, the Administrative Coordinator of the company, Adanna Mary said “China Harbour is a company that believes so much in education. We believe that one day everyone will be able to achieve the education of their dreams, to the level where they all wish to get to.”
“So, this is our way of showing our support to education as well as quenching our thirst for community service because but for the peaceful existence of the community, we wouldn’t be here for the project. So, this is our little way of supporting our community.”
Also speaking, the Government Liaison for the company, Osobonye Longjohn had words of commendation for the gesture by the company, syaing that he has taken cognizance of the needs highlighted by staff of the school, assuring that it would be communicated to the relevant authorities for action.
China Harbour Engineering Company Limited is an engineering contractor and a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company, providing infrastructure construction, such as marine engineering, dredging and reclamation, road and bridge, railways, airports and plant construction.
