Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League; Enyimba International of Aba and Remo Stars of Ikenne, have both been subjected to early exits from the CAF Champions League following appalling outcomes in their second-leg games on Sunday, 27 August 2023.
Remo Stars exited the CAF Champions League following a 4-3 defeat via penalties in the second leg against Medeama SC of Ghana. The first leg ended 1-0 in favour of the Ghanaian side and Remo Stars found the back of the net in the second, levelling the game on aggregate and prompting a penalty shootout which proved futile.
The Peoples Elephants also exited the competition, losing to Al Ahly Benghazi 4-3 on aggregate. The first leg ended 4-3 in Libya and the scores remained unchanged in the second.
It’s the first time the Nigerian champions, Enyimba would be wiped out in the preliminary round of the tournament.
Enyimba and Remo Stars exit is a huge disappointment to Nigerian football and leaves Bendel Insurance to carry the mantle on the continent after almost two decades of absence.
