Barring any last minute change in plans, the Senate is set to screen the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad on Wednesday with a view to confirming as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Kristina Reports reliably learnt that Justice Muhammad will be screened by a committee of the whole Senate.
President Muhammadu Buhari had, last week, forwarded Justice Muhammad’s name to the Senate for confirmation, upon his recommendation for appointment as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
This was in accordance with Section 23(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
Muhammad will replace former CJN Walter Onnoghen, who was ousted from office earlier this year.
Onnoghen was convicted of failure to declare aspects of his assets by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) and barred from holding public office for a period of 10 years.
The decision to screen the nominee was taken after a voice vote called by the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan.
