The Nigerian Navy, early this morning, rescued four officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), who were abducted on the Bonny River yesterday by sea pirates.
According to the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy (NN) Forward Operating Base (FOB), Bonny, Commodore Kola Oguntuga, the officers were rescued during a surprise operation by the Maritime component of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe, comprising the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Bonny and Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS), Pathfinder, Port Harcourt.
Daredevil sea pirates have, for years now, been terrorizing the Bonny waterways where they rob, maim, abduct and, in some cases, kill passengers traveling to or from Bonny.
In a renewed effort to checkmate their activities, the State Governor, Nyesom Wike recently donated gun boats to the Nigerian Navy and the Nigeria Police through the Chairman of Bonny LGA, David Irimagha, to upscale their patrol on the Bonny-Port Harcourt sea route.
Commodore Oguntuga told Kristina Reports that the operation took place in the creeks in an area close to Abonnema, headquarter of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, where some yet-to-be disclosed items were recovered from the hoodlums who fled the scene upon sighting the security operatives.
He further disclosed that the rescued immigration officers would be handed over to the Nigeria Police later today.
Recall that the Enough is Enough (EIE) group led by a former Secretary General of the Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Emmanuel Bristol-Alagbariyagha recently hailed the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Nigerian Navy, Bonny for partnering with the group to address the security challenges on the Bonny waterways.
A resident of Bonny Island, who preferred anonymity, in a chat with Kristina Reports hailed the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies for their efforts in rescuing the abducted officers and addressing the security challenges on the waterways.
