BREAKING: Edo State Governorship Election: INEC declares Obaseki winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), winner of the yesterday’s governorship election having pulled a total of 307,955 in all the 18 Local Government Areas in the state, while Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu pulled a total of 223,619.

Obaseki is returned re-elected for another four years in office as governor of Edo State.

The governor via his Twitter handle thanked party supporters for their courage and the Edo people for standing behind him through the trying times.

“Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation and brutalization.

“The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to all Edo people. This is our victory!,” he tweeted.

Supporters of the PDP have stormed the streets of Edo in jubilation of their party emerging victorious in the election.

Members of the civil society groups have called on INEC to ensure protection of the electorates in subsequent elections across the country adding that more work need to be done by the umpire in making sure that voters apathy is shunned.
