The Bayelsa State Police Command on Friday announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew to check the ongoing riots in the state following the judgement of the Supreme Court which sacked APC’s David Lyon and paved way for PDP’s Douye Diri to become Governor.
The State Commissioner of Police, Uche Anozia, who briefed the press alongside heads of other security agencies in Creek Haven (Government House), Yenagoa, on Friday, announced that the curfew would last between 8am to 6am beginning from Friday to Sunday.
Anozia, who warned residents to obey the curfew, insisting that violators would be arrested and prosecuted, disclosed that eight persons had been arrested, so far, for violent conduct following the protest rocking different parts of the state.
In a related development, the protesters on Friday morning attacked the home of Bayelsa governor-elect, Douye Diri, on Imgbi Road, Amarata, Yenagoa, the state capital.
During the attack, they vandalised some vehicles in his compound and damaged parts of the building.
The attack came a few hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission issued a Certificate of Return to Diri in compliance with the verdict of the Supreme Court.
Anozia further said that the decision followed the violent protests that rocked the state capital on Friday morning when the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the November 2019 election, Douye Diri, was issued a Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
