In demonstration of her sporting talent, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Dame Anengi Barasua joined other athletes to participate in the 2022 edition of the Bonny Island Marathon (BIM).
The athletic politician on the morning of Saturday, December 10, 2022, raced through the 21 kilometer distance from the Finima Football Pitch through the LGA Secretariat Complex at Hospital Road culminating at the Government Primary School, Bonny.
In her remarks at the closing ceremony, the Bonny LGA Chief Executive said the BIM had attained an enviable status as an annual recreational event to expect on the Island, adding that from her assessment the organisers were ready to achieve global fame for the brand.
She solicited the support of stakeholders for the event, noting that the marathon organisers have proven their mettle and needs to be supported through a larger participation by career and leisure athletes in next year’s edition.
A statement by her Deputy Press Secretary disclosed that “apart from the supportive role of the Local Government in the actualization of the 2022 Bonny Island Marathon, the Bonny LGA Chairman equally announced an additional N100,000 cash prize each for the overall and indigenous winners, respectively.
Wadata Barau, who hails from Bauchi State, emerged first place winner in Male Elite Category with a record time of 52 minutes and 49 seconds; while Kauna Bitrus who hails from Plateau State, emerged first place winner in the Female Elite Category with a record time of 1 hour, 5 minutes and 29 seconds.
Dame Anengi Barasua also presented prizes to some of the winners and was also conferred with a medal of honour by the Management of BIM.
