Amidst widespread outcry of a horribly rigged presidential election, Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairman of the Nigeria’s electoral umpire has declared Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as president elect.

Yakubu announced Tinubu winner after the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 8,805,655 votes ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, who got 6,984,520 votes and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who garnered 6,101,553 votes.

Ahead of the declaration of the results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reports of violation of a critical requirement of the Electoral Act as amended that results should be uploaded from the polling units using the Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) were rife across the country.

Against the backdrop of protests that the commission should not go ahead with the process, Yakubu was reported to have snubbed the outcries and went ahead with the announcement of results.

His decision was vehemently protested against at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, venue of the National Collation Centre by the collation agents of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and several other political parties.

With the INEC Chairman insisting on going ahead with the declaration, positing that the process can only be reviewed after it is concluded, the protesting political parties staged a walkout. But this did not deter Yakubu, nonetheless.

On the side, international election observers, including the ECOWAS observer mission, National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute (IRI), and European Union observer mission, amongst several others thumbed down the polls as heavily flawed and fraught with malpractices, discrimination against women and people with disabilities, lack of transparency and corruption.

Reacting to his declaration as president elect, Bola Tinubu said he would serve Nigerians and provide them the required leadership to move the country forward, calling on his co-contestants to join him in the efforts to rebuild the country.

Also, speaking, Governor of Kaduna State, Nasiru El Rufai, on his verified Twitter handle called for calm, assuring that though Tinubu has never been president of the country before, he would right the wrongs in the polity.
