In the spirit of corporate social responsibility, the Nigerian Navy and Evomec Global Services Limited (EGSL) are partnering with the Bonny Local Government Council to reconstruct the collapsed section of the Akiama Road in Akiama Community, Bonny.

Kristina Reports reliably gathered that the Navy and Evomec secured the approval of the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, David Irimagha to reconstruct the collapsed section of the road, which was closed to traffic since October, 2019, by the Works Department of the Bonny LG Council.

Commanding Officer (CO) of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy, Bonny, Navy Capt. Badamasi Yahuza, and the Managing Director of Evomec Global Services Limited (EGSL), Chief Peter Esievo, confirmed this development in separate telephone chats with Kristina Reports on Friday, November 27, 2020.

Navy Capt Yahuza disclosed that it was a joint effort by the two organizations to ease traffic on that axis of the island, thus enhancing business activities and making life easier for commuters.

Chief Esievo stated that the initiative was in line with his company’s policy thrust to acquit itself as a good corporate citizen, community partner and social impact purveyor.

On his part, Chairman of Bonny LGA, David Irimagha said he gave approval for the reconstruction of the collapsed section of the road in line with his administration’s drive to prioritize the wellbeing of the people of the area.

“The collapsed road became a top priority to me because I know the effects it will have directly on residents and business owners, and being a grassroots leader, I understand the plight of the people, as well as, the inconvenience they are currently experiencing”.

Irimagha, who spoke through the Secretary to the Bonny Local Government Council, Omoni Long-John, stated that the failed section of the road had been assessed, measured, and redesigned, explaining that when completed that section would have a brand new and wider culvert that will evacuate larger volumes of water flowing underneath it.

Checks by Kristina Reports indicate that residents of the area and staff of various corporate entities in that axis of Bonny Island have been subjected to untold hardship due to the closure of the road a year and a month ago.

These corporate entities include the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy, Akiama, Bonny, Bonny Vocational Centre (BVC), Ibanise Hall, Bonny Information Centre (BIC), Jephtah Hotels and Suites, St. Charles Surgery, St. Charles Guest House, and the Chief Magistrate Court, Bonny, amongst others.

Commuters accessing that area have had to make a detour through the Aye Road via the back of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, to be able to enter Akiama and Oguede Communities.

This has deepened the suffering of the people of the area as commuters have had to cope with the spike in transportation fares in that axis.

Reacting to the development, Youth Leader of Akiama Community, ibifubara Allaputa praised the effort of the Nigerian Navy, Evomec Global Services in conjunction with the Bonny LG Council, saying his kinsmen and women were pleased with the development.

Allaputa used the opportunity to thank the Chairman of Bonny LGA, David Irimagha, Commanding Officer of the FOB, Bonny, Navy Capt. Badamasi Yahuza, and Managing Director of EGSL, Chief Peter Esievo for their timely intervention, which according to him will go a long way to ease the suffering of his people.
