The Ogbobiri Asawo (Male Adults) of Bonny Kingdom, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bonny Branch, and Peace Motorcycle Union have agreed to review downwards the transport fare for commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada to various destinations in Bonny Island.

Chairmen of the three groups, Eugene Jumbo, Tamunoimim Benstowe and Gibson Banigo, respectively, announced this on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at the Bonny Youth Federation (BYF) Secretariat along King Asimini Bypass in Bonny.

According to them, the decision was the outcome of a meeting between the three groups and it is geared towards making the festive season in Bonny LGA conducive and memorable for both residents and visitors to the area.

Four major categories were agreed on and these include long distances that crisscross both ends of the island, which were pegged at N400 maximum, while the other distances were reduced to between N300 and N100.

Going forward passengers will now pay N400 for trips between Coal Beach and Abalamabie and Oguede; N300 from Coal Beach to Coconut Estate and Eagle Forest; while from Willbros Junction to NLNG Roundabout and Finima is now N200 and N300, respectively.

This move has been seen as very apt and coming at a time when living conditions were getting more difficult in the island which many fear would have been worsened by the hike in transport fares during this Yuletide period.

Chairman of the Bonny Kingdom Ogbobiri Asawo, Eugene Jumbo further appealed to the commercial motorcyclists to be safety conscious during the festive season, stressing that the rowdy environment during the period due to different celebrative activities should be taken into account, urging residents and visitors to show greater understanding with the okada riders.
