The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has declared that several parts of Rivers State including Ahoada, Omoku, Etche, Ikwerre, Oyigbo, among others, are all part of Igbo land.

President General of the group, Emmanuel Iwuanyawu stated this on Monday, April 22, 2024 during a press conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He further underscored the widespread presence of Igbo communities across Nigeria, including Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, Kogi, and Edo States.

Addressing the age-old debate, Chief Iwuanyawu clarified that communities such as Onitsha, Owerri, Aba, Ngwa, Enugu, Nsukka, Anioma, Ika, Abakaliki, and Ikwerre, among others, are integral parts of the Igbo ethnic heritage.

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized the inclusivity of the Igbo identity during his inaugural visit to Rivers State since assuming office on April 30, 2023, asserting that the Igbo community encompasses various groups, dispelling longstanding controversies surrounding ethnic affiliations.

He emphasized the industrious nature of the Igbo people, noting their significant contributions to the socio-economic fabric of the nation.

“Wherever they go, they prosper,” he remarked, highlighting the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to community development among Igbo residents.

Regarding the role of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Iwuanyanwu elucidated its fundamental purpose as a protective shield for Igbo individuals facing adversity.

He clarified that Ohanaeze Ndigbo does not mandate official registration or membership, emphasizing its organic formation rooted in the collective desire to safeguard Igbo interests.

“We are there to defend our people whenever they face serious hostilities or aggression,” he affirmed, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Chief Iwuanyanwu also extended the notion of membership to include spouses and offspring of Igbo descent, emphasizing the exponential growth of Ohanaeze’s constituency.

He lauded the presence of vibrant diaspora communities in countries such as the United States, Brazil, United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, further enriching the global Igbo network.
