In furtherance of Kristina Reports’ quest to get to the root of the incident that occurred at Coconut Estate in the Abalamabie axis of Bonny Island, our Security Correspondent, Susan Pepple engaged the Officer-in-Charge of the Marine Police, Bonny, Solomon Adeniyi, a Superintendent of Police (SP), who made some clarifications on the matter.
Can you tell us what happened yesterday night at Coconut Estate?
I don’t really know what really transpired yesterday but the information got to us this morning. It was the Divisional Police Officer that called this office around 10am that an incident had occurred at Coconut Estate. He said that in the process somebody drowned or somebody was killed and in that regard he wanted us to intercept a suspected boat at the sea. The moment he gave us the description of the boat we alerted our people that have been keeping watch at the river to intercept the boat, which they did. They intercepted the boat and escorted it back to Bonny and the moment they came back here, the suspect in question was handed over to the DPO for further investigations. That is what happened this morning.
Has it been confirmed that there was a loss of life?
Yes, he died, but what I was told is that he is still in the water, his body has not yet been found. They are still searching for him now.
Have the suspects been arrested, and did they have a hand in the killing?
We just handed over the suspects to the DPO, it is now left for him to unravel the circumstances that led to the death.
What will be your advice to the general public in order not to record a recurrence of this incident?
The only thing is that we continue to advise them on the safety of the sea, because the fracas that ensued between both parties happened on the sea which is against the law of the sea. We don’t fight on the sea. If there are any differences or any problem we need to try and solve it on the land.
