Aba Power Restored After Prolonged Blackout
Electricity supply has been restored to major parts of Aba, Abia State, following days of prolonged outage that disrupted businesses, industries and other activities across the commercial city.
Power was restored on Saturday, August 8, 2026, bringing relief to residents and business owners who had endured intermittent and, in some areas, prolonged darkness.
The restoration comes days after Aba Power Limited repeatedly attributed the outage to challenges affecting its primary power provider, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL).
In an update issued on August 1, Aba Power said GPAL had suffered a total loss of gas supply from its supplier due to technical faults at the supplier’s facility. The company also disclosed that its usual backup supply from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company was unavailable because the Aba Ring-fence Area had been cut off from the national grid.
Aba Power subsequently announced on August 2 that repairs were nearing completion and assured customers that efforts were being intensified to restore normal supply.
The Chairman of Aba Power Limited, Prof. Barth Nnaji, had also assured residents earlier in the week that electricity would return before the end of the week following a meeting with the Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Power and Public Utilities.
“I want to assure the people of Aba that they should expect power this week,” Nnaji said.
The eventual restoration has provided some relief to residents and businesses that had been forced to depend heavily on generators during the blackout.
The prolonged outage had raised concerns among manufacturers, traders, technology businesses and other electricity-dependent enterprises, with many operators complaining about increased operating costs and disruption to their activities.
It had also generated public debate over the sustainability of Aba’s electricity supply, particularly given the importance of stable power to the city’s industrial and commercial development.
For residents, the restoration marks an end to several days of uncertainty, although attention is now expected to shift towards measures that will prevent a recurrence of the prolonged disruption.
Aba Power had assured customers that it would continue engaging Geometric Power and other relevant stakeholders to establish a lasting solution to the challenges affecting electricity supply in the Aba Ring-fence Area.
