Super Falcons Dynamo Deborah Abiodun Locks Down Long-Term Washington Spirit Extension
Washington Spirit fans have plenty to celebrate as Nigerian international sensation Deborah Abiodun has officially committed her future to the NWSL club.
The Washington-based outfit announced a new contract extension that keeps the dynamic Super Falcons midfielder locked in through 2028, with a mutual option to extend the deal into 2029.
The agreement marks a major milestone for the 22-year-old, rewarding her rapid development and crucial role in the squad’s midfield setup.
“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” Abiodun shared.
“My experience here has helped me mature immensely as a player, and I can’t wait to keep contributing to the team’s success over the coming seasons.”
Since arriving ahead of the 2025 campaign, Abiodun’s path in Washington has been nothing short of impressive:
Strategic Growth: She initially went out on loan during the first half of the season to sharpen her professional skills.
Impactful Recall: Recalled by the Spirit in August 2025, she immediately integrated into the squad and fueled their late-season drive toward the NWSL Championship.
On-Field Production: Across 21 appearances, she has netted one goal and registered one assist while anchoring the midfield.
Her high-energy pressing and tactical composure haven’t gone unnoticed by the front office. Washington Spirit Sporting Director James Hocken praised her unique impact on the pitch:
“Deb brings a very unique skillset to our midfield. Her work rate and energy without possession, paired with her composure on the ball, make her an exceptional asset. Watching her progress through our loan pathway into a key contributor has been a pleasure, and we are thrilled to keep her in DC for the long haul.”
Abiodun’s rapid rise in the NWSL builds on a stellar collegiate and international resume:
Before turning pro, Abiodun spent two dominant seasons with the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, making 34 appearances while tallying 10 goals and 3 assists. Her standout play earned her back-to-back All-ACC honours:
2023: Freshman All-ACC & Third Team All-ACC
2024: Second Team All-ACC
Born in Oyo State, Nigeria, Abiodun made her senior international debut in September 2022. She quickly became a staple for the Super Falcons, representing her nation at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Her national team career reached new heights in 2025 when she played a vital role in leading Nigeria to victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), lifting the country’s record-extending 10th continental title.
