All Roads Lead to Opobo Kingdom as King Charles Douglas Macpepple Jaja is installed Amanyanabo, Jeki VI in Historic Coronation
The Opobo Kingdom has announced the official coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, as its Amanyanabo and Treaty King.
The ancient Kingdom says the coronation will be a 10-day programme of cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial activities scheduled to hold from Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 27, 2026.
This was announced by the Opobo Council of Alapu in a statement signed by the Chief of Protocol and Public Relations, Alabo Godwin Omoni Nengia Bupo, Abayebupo Duke Norfolk III, on behalf of the Council.
According to the statement, the coronation will usher in what the kingdom described as a new chapter in its history while celebrating its enduring cultural heritage and legacy of leadership.
Founded in the year 1870 by the legendary merchant prince, King Jaja of Opobo, alongside his compatriots, Opobo Kingdom has remained one of the Niger Delta’s most historically significant traditional institutions, renowned for its thriving commercial history, diplomatic influence and rich Ijaw cultural heritage.
Situated along the coastal waters of the Niger Delta, the kingdom has over the decades earned recognition for its resilience, independent spirit and commitment to preserving its customs and traditions.
The Council of Alapu said the ascension of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, marks the beginning of the kingdom’s sixth chapter, with the new monarch expected to build on the enduring legacy of his predecessors while promoting unity, cultural preservation and economic development.
The statement noted that, as Treaty King, MacPepple Jaja assumes a revered institution deeply rooted in history and entrusted with preserving the values and aspirations of the Opobo people.
According to the council, “This historic coronation which commences on Friday, September 18, to Sunday September 27, 2026 is not merely the crowning of a King, but a celebration of our resilience, our ancestry, and our enduring identity.”
The kingdom said revered monarchs, traditional rulers, captains of industry, sons and daughters of Opobo, friends of the kingdom and distinguished guests from across the world are expected to attend the historic event.
It added that a comprehensive calendar of cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial activities marking the coronation will be unveiled and hosted across the kingdom throughout the celebration period.
The statement reaffirmed the kingdom’s commitment to showcasing its rich heritage while welcoming visitors from within and outside Nigeria to witness what it described as a landmark moment in the history of Opobo Kingdom.
