Mentor’s Final Curtain Falls as Theatre Alumni Mourn Patrick Okoye
The Association of Theatre Arts Students Alumni of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has paid an emotional tribute to Patrick Okoye, describing his death as a painful loss to the theatre community and generations of students whose lives he influenced through teaching, mentorship and the performing arts.
The association, in a statement released on Friday, July 3, 2026, mourned Okoye, who was a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, describing him as an actor, mentor, friend and a pillar whose influence shaped countless lives within and beyond the institution.

According to the tribute jointly signed by the association’s secretary, Dr. Christy Agim, and president, Ozi Okoli, Okoye was more than a lecturer, as he dedicated his life to nurturing talents, inspiring dreams and transforming the lives of generations of students.
“The news of his departure has left a void that words can scarcely express.”
“He was more than an educator; he was a guiding light, a father figure to many, and a passionate advocate for excellence in theatre arts and life itself,” Agim said.

She added that through his teachings, mentorship and personal example, Okoye inspired young people to pursue excellence while making lasting contributions to theatre education and the creative industry.
“As an accomplished actor and respected lecturer, he brought wisdom, creativity, discipline, and humanity into every space he occupied.”
“His commitment to the arts and to the development of young people will remain an enduring legacy,” she said.
Agim said the association was not only mourning the loss of a mentor but also celebrating a life dedicated to impact, service and purpose.
“Today, we do not merely mourn a loss; we celebrate a life of impact, service, and purpose.”
“Though he has taken his final bow on the earthly stage, we believe he has ascended to the grand stage of our revered ancestors, where his legacy will continue to resonate through the lives he touched,” she stated.
Extending the association’s condolences, Agim said members would continue to cherish Okoye’s legacy and the values he imparted to his students and colleagues.
“Farewell, our mentor.”
“Farewell, our teacher.”
“Farewell, our friend.”
” Your curtain call has come, but your influence will forever echo in our hearts and on every stage we grace,” she said.
The tribute, jointly signed by Dr. Christy Agim, secretary, and Ozi Okoli, president of the Association of Theatre Arts Students Alumni of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, also conveyed the association’s condolences to Okoye’s family, colleagues, friends, students and everyone whose life he touched.
Okoye’s funeral began with a vigil Mass on Friday, July 3, 2026, at his father’s compound in Orofia Village, Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to the funeral programme, his body will leave Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, for a lying-in-state before a requiem Mass and interment at his father’s compound, while an outing service will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Parish.
