Lawmakers representing the 12 wards in the Bonny Local Government Legislative Council (BLGLC) have vehemently condemned the attack on and barbaric killing of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Oliver Inoma-Abbey by persons suspected to be members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Leader of the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Miriam Hart, speaking on behalf of her colleagues, described the killing of Inoma-Abbey as ‘inhuman, dastardly, and unconscionable’, calling on the Nigeria Police, the Federal and Rivers State Governments to ensure justice was “meted out on the perpetrators of this heinous act of wickedness on a highly respected son of Bonny LGA, the Niger Delta and indeed, Nigeria”.
Hart, who is also the Councillor representing Ward 7, said the Bonny Local Government Legislative Council was worried that a top ranking police chief such as ACP Inoma-Abbey, could be attacked in such a gruesome manner, charging the Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the slain police chief.
Other lawmakers in the Legislative Council include the Deputy Leader and Councillor, Ward 4, Dipinye Jumbo, Chief Whip and Councillor, Ward 3, Fiberesima Pepple, Councillors, Ward 1, Christian Jumbo, Ward 2, Kingston Hart, Ward 5, Ibianga Brown, Ward 6, Esther Pepple, Ward 8, Mie-iyeoju Jumbo, Ward 9, Prince Wilcox, Ward 10, Seth Adolphus, Ward 11, Ibinye Wilcox, and Ward 12, Solomon Pollyn
According to her, “the incident at Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State is unexplainable, unacceptable and totally condemnable. It does not appear that the Police in Anambra State did what they were supposed to do to protect their own from harm’s way, nay, a senior ranking officer for that matter. Obviously, should things be allowed to go on like this, the life expectancy of the average policeman or woman would remain drastically reduced”.
The Bonny Number One lawmaker appealed to the people of Bonny, Rivers State and the Niger Delta to remain and refuse to resort to obvious provocation but allow the relevant security and law enforcement agencies to get to the root of the matter.
She also reassured the Igbo community residing in Bonny LGA that their safety and security was guaranteed and nothing untoward will happen to them, however, charging the proscribed terrorist group, IPOB and any groups that want to foment trouble to stay clear of Bonny LGA, warning that no measure will be spared in dealing decisively with any such group.
“The Bonny Local Government Legislative Council will give the necessary legal backing to the Executive Chairman of Bonny LGA, Hon. Engr. David Rogers Irimagha, to deal decisively and ruthlessly with any group, be it IPOB or whatever else that attempts to disturb the peace of the area. We, however, want to reassure the Igbo community residing and doing business in Bonny of their safety and security”.
