A Rivers State High Court sitting at Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State has issued an interim order restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly and its Speaker, Martins Amaewhule from impeaching the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Also restrained were the Deputy Speaker, the Clerk of the House and the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Simeon Amadi.
The presiding judge, Justice Ben Whyte issued the order following a suit filed by the Governor against the defendants and directed that parties should maintain the status quo pending the determination of the motion on notice.
He, thereafter, adjourned the matter to Tuesday, November 14, 2023 for hearing on the motion on notice.
With this order of the court, Fubara appears to have gotten some reprieve from his traducers who have already expressed their resolve to remove him from office.
Some members of the State Assembly led by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, had met on Monday, October 30, 2023 and passed a resolution to serve an impeachment notice of the Governor.
This was after purportedly removed the Majority Leader of the House, Ehie Edison, and suspended four of their colleagues.
But in a twist of fate, Edison and seven other members announced that they have impeached Amaewhule and suspended 23 other members, adding that they would face a panel to clear their names of the allegations against them.
