Super Falcons centre-back Ashleigh Plumptre has moved to Saudi Pro League Side, Al-Ittihad following the expiration of her contract for Leicester City in July in the English Women’s Super League.
The 25-year-old has joined forces with Morocco’s Salma Amani at the Club and the likes of Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Fabinho, who play in the men’s division.
Plumptre has always seen football as more than just football. She joined the Nigerian National Team despite already playing for England at the youth level in a bid to connect with her roots and has now joined the Saudi Arabian bandwagon for a similar purpose.
“Grateful to have signed for Al-Ittihad. Excited to start this journey alongside some incredible human beings. My journey of self-discovery continues. It’s more than football” Plumptre said on X (Twitter)
In her unveiling for Al-Ittihad, Ashleigh Plumptre revealed that she wants to represent something bigger than herself and is looking forward to what the team can achieve.
” Football for me has always been about connecting with not only more of myself but with the people I’m surrounded by, whether that’s my teammates or staff. And then throughout everything that I’ve been in my career is always about representing something bigger than myself.
Joining Al-Ittihad I feel as if I’m going to have plenty opportunities off and on the pitch, to be able to learn about football here. For me, don’t come here with any expectations, I come here being myself and I hope that I can learn and take so much from the environment, both as a football player but most importantly as a human being and I’m already feeling that.
I’m just looking forward to getting the journey started with the team and seeing what we can achieve in every aspect.”
Ashleigh Plumptre had a strong showing at the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup and would be a huge boost to the Saudi Arabian Side.
