The Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) says it was disheartening that less than two months to the presidential elections, candidates of the various political parties participating in the polls were yet to state succinctly their plans on how to optimize waste management for the health, wellbeing and social good of Nigerians.

President of the WAMASON, Chief Akpabio Esien, AmbGW stated this is a statement he personally signed and made exclusively available to Kristina Reports on Thursday, January 5, 2023 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

“It is worrisome that about 50 days to the general elections and less than five months to transition of power and birth of a new political dispensation, no candidate we know has stated what they plan to do in terms of optimizing waste management.”

“This calls for concern, especially when the necessity of waste management is juxtaposed with the imperative of a healthy nation and how interwoven waste management is to several other issues. Our politicians need to tell us what their plans are in this direction.”

The Corporate Health, Safety and Environment (CHSE) expert explained that flooding, climate change, environment degradation, global warming and several other ecological and health challenges are traceable to improper waste management culture, urging the electorate to demand responsibility from their leaders in that regard.

Nigeria is still recovering from the shocks of the recent flooding that engulfed parts of the country displacing several communities and engendering a huge number of internally displaced persons, endangering livelihoods and impacting on businesses int eh affected areas.

A close examination of the causative factors behind the flooding debacle by environmental experts indicate that aside the release of waters from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroun, the improper disposal of waste resulted in blocked drainages and canals which amplified the situation.

The real facts are, most of the top politicians believe in winning and they purposely know about the whole setup about the environmental degradation ,There’s need for waste Banks across the whole nation polling center . These will make the centers to have a new dimensions of zero waste tolerance.
