An Honorary Fellowship of the Emergency, Crisis, Disaster, Safety, Environmental and Risk Management Institute (ECRMI) has been conferred on the National President of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Chief Akpabio Ndarake Esien, AmbGW.
Receiving the award, Chief Esien thanked the ECRMI Governing Board and Director General, Dr. Chuks Akawo, of the Institute and described it as “a recognition of his lifetime commitment to value addition to the society through the efforts towards protection of our Environment and Assets of our country and development of human capacity in the ER space.
Conferring the award on the WAMASON President on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the Nigerian Army Resource Center, Abuja, Nigeria, the Institute said Chief Akpabio Esien “satisfied all requirements of the Institute for certification as an Emergency, Crisis, Disaster, Safety, Environment and Risk Manager”.
Chief Esien, who is the Corporate Health, Safety and Environment (CHSE) Manager of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG), told Kristina Reports shortly after the conferment of the fellowship on him that “it gladdens my heart that my value addition to society was being acknowledged by way of this and several other awards”.
Expressing his appreciation to the Emergency, Crisis, Disaster, Safety, Environmental and Risk Management Institute for recognizing and gratifying his strategic efforts in line with the vision mandate of the institute, Chief Esien urged the ECRMI leadership to sustain the drive to encourage and thus motivate exceptional contributions towards timely and professional emergency response during disasters and promoting the wellbeing of our society.
The award recipient was seconded from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to the NLNG and has since distinguished himself in his field of expertise, as well as the President of WAMASON, where he had been leading the vanguard of awareness creation on the linkages between how wastes are managed and sanitation, health and safety of individuals.
He started his career in the Oil and Gas Industry in 1991 as a Safety Officer in the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of NNPC. In 1992, he was transferred to Eleme Petrochemicals Company Limited (EPCL) Project as Environment Officer.
In 2005, he was seconded to NLNG as Senior Environmental Advisor and rose to become Head of Environment before taking up the role of Superintendent, Environmental Studies in Group HSEQ (GHSEQ) Department of NNPC CHQ at NNPC Towers, Abuja in 2009. In 2011, he was again seconded to Brass LNG Project Office in Lagos as HSE Specialist Environment till 2014 when he was de-seconded back to NNPC as Deputy Manager Waste Management in GHSEQ Department, NNPC CHQ Abuja.
Chief Akpabio Esien, who is married to Chinyere Esien and the union is blessed with four children, has had several trainings within and outside Nigeria and recently in several Shell Companies including SPDC; Shell Integrated Gas Ventures-Houston Texas; Oman LNG-Sur and Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis Plant-Bintulu – Malaysia before taking up the current role in NLNG.
Chief Akpabio Esien is the current National President of Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Fellow WAMASON, Fellow Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) – UK, a Chartered Environmentalist of Society of the Environment-UK, Member Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)-UK and Member of Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) and American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) among other professional organisations. He is an Awardee of Ambassador of Good Will (AmbGw) and Justice of Peace (JP) by United Nation Positive Livelihood Awards Centre (UN-POLAR).
