The lawmaker representing Ward 10 in the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Kingsley Jumbo has called for urgent intervention to contain the gas leakage at Sangama Community in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Councillor, who made this call on Thursday, September 8, 2022 on the floor of the Assembly while addressing his colleagues, described the incident as an atmospheric debacle as, according to him, the gas has been spreading to other communities.
“I raised the issue informing Honourable Members of the incident as well as its hazardous effect on not just the lives of the people therein but its environmental impact and atmospheric effect.”
“I raised the matter as the Councillor of the Ward where Sangama is located while equally condemning the abandonment or blame games by the IOCs.”
Community members had raised alarm over the incident, calling on the relevant authorities to intervene to contain the incident and remediate the impacted environment, saying their means of livelihoods and economic life has been negatively impacted.
After listening to contributions on how to provide an adequate and speedy response to the incident, Leader of the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Larry Ibaningo expressed concern over the issue, describing it as “a serious matter of health”.
He thence directed the Legislative Assembly Committee on Health, Environment and Sanitation Services, and the Committee on Peace and Security to follow up on the matter to report back to the House.
