Barely one month after assuming office, Chairman of Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Michael Williams has taken steps to create the right atmosphere for seamless development and economic activities to thrive in the area.

This was evidenced in the launching of critical security infrastructure for the surveillance of waterways in the area, which according to him, was in a bid to “curb the perennial criminal activities along the Port Harcourt-Bille waterways by sea pirates”.

Willaims came out with this during the presentation of two fully equipped 200HP YAMAHA-Powered Surveillance Speed Boats for the effective policing of the Bille waterways and its adjoining creeks at the Local Government Council headquarters in Degema on Tuesday, July 12, 2021.

A statement by the Press Secretary to the Degema LGA Chairman, Daerefa-a Braide, explained that the move was in line with the Michael William administration’s resolve to secure all communities of the LGA by taking proactive security measures.

The statement warned that “the Council would not support extrajudicial killing of sea pirates, noting that any criminal element apprehended by the Surveillance Team should be handed over to the security operatives for proper prosecution.”

According to the statement, the member representing Degema Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Anthony Soberekon, commended the Council Chairman for his well-thought initiative in ensuring that the troubled coastal communities in the LGA are well secure.

According to the statement, spokesman of the Bille Kingdom Council of Chiefs and a former Chairman of the LGA, Alabo Boma Dappa, thanked God for the choice of the Chairman of Council, noting that it was a good beginning for the current administration in the LGA.

Dappa while extending the gratitude of the Amanyanabo, chiefs and people of Bille Kingdom to the DELGA Chairman, assured that the Bille people will make judicious use of the government’s investment in their kingdom.

Announcing other projects to be embarked upon by the LGA in 100 days, the statement informed that the projects will include; “the Pedro Compound Memorial Hall and Ekine Sekiapu House in Bakana, as well as the Ogruama Community Footbridge, amongst other projects are to be completed and commissioned within three months to mark his 100 days in office.”
