The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt has temporarily relieved Dr Rowland Uchechukwu Igwe from his official duties in the institution over strong allegations of sexual harassment and impregnating a yet-to-be-identified undergraduate student.
Until his suspension today, Dr Igwe, the alleged sexual offender, was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology in the school.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ozo-mekuri Ndimele who came out with this position in a statement through his verified Facebook account today, noted that the student is currently pregnant as a result of the lecturer’s action and she was then in severe complications.
Prof. Ndimele stated that Dr Igwe was being placed on “an Indefinite suspension over allegations of serial intimidation, sexual harassment and undue canal knowledge of a female undergraduate which resulted in her impregnation and other complications.”
The matter, according to the statement, has been referred to the Council-Senate Committee on staff disciplinary matters for further investigation.
It would be recalled that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has been on the fore front of the campaign against sexual harassment and intimidation of female undergraduate students.
The Governor had warned during the 30th convocation ceremony of the Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, that his administration would not tolerate any stain on the moral standard of State owned tertiary institutions.
The forward looking approach to the alleged sexual harassment at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education may be in response to the marching order of its visitor.
Efforts made by Kristina Reports to reach Dr. Igwe for his reaction proved abortive as his official mobile number was not reachable as at press time. Kristina Reports will keep up tabs for updates as the incident unfolds.
