The Super Falcons shared the spoils with hosts, Ethiopia at Abebe Bikila Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
On a day when the Super Falcons did not come out all guns blazing, it was Captain Rasheedat Ajibade who got the goal to avoid defeat and see the game end 1-1.
Birkie Amare granted Ethiopia an early lead just six minutes into the game via a scramble inside the Super Falcons’ 18-yard box from a corner kick.
Rasheedat Ajibad then took advantage of a poor clearance by an Ethiopian defender outside the box in the 52nd minute and whipped in a stunning volley to help avert defeat for the Super Falcons who had struggled for most of the first half.
Deep into stoppage time, In the 92nd minute, Ifeoma Onumonu found the back of the net but her effort to snatch the win for the Super Falcons was chalked off for offside.
The return leg is slated to be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, with the victor on aggregate to lock horns with the winner of the Cameroon/Uganda tie for a spot in the last round of the qualification series.
The Olympic Games will span from Friday, July 26, 2024, to Saturday, August 11, 2024, in Paris.
