In a bid to scale up the scope of electoral franchise for Nigerians and apparently brighten the chances of a seamless 2023 general polling experience in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it was in the process of converting existing Voting Points and Voting Points Settlements into full-fledged polling units.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers State, Obo Effanga, disclosed this on Thursday, February 18, 2021 via a statement signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Commission in the State, Geraldine Ekelemu, and exclusively made available to Kristina Reports.
He explained that the process would “expand access to polling units and decongest existing polling units clustered in the same locations.”
The rationale for the exercise may not be unconnected to drawbacks traceable to the growing Nigerian population without the attendant expansion of electoral subdivisions.
Kristina Reports findings show that, there are altogether 119,73 polling units and 57,023 voting point settlements nationwide, and this move by INEC may be a stop-gap measure to ease the voting process and create opportunities for people in new settlements not captured by previous polling units in Rivers State.
Effanga further disclosed that the Commission was currently consulting various stakeholders across the country and would later cascade the consultations to the state and local government levels to ensure that no interest is left out.
The Commission also warned “unscrupulous elements” to desist from taking “advantage of innocent members of the public to claim ability to attract, influence, create or expand access to polling units anywhere”.
