Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri made good his promise to create talent showcasing opportunities for his people as he kicked off the Governor’s Cup at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, the State capital.
The tournament also known as the Prosperity Cup is Nigeria’s largest and most prestigious grassroots football tournament.
This year’s edition features 214 registered teams, set to showcase their brightest youngsters.
Initially known as ‘The Restoration Cup’ it was conceptualised during former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson’s tenure.
The maiden edition held in 2015 saw Ewoama FC of Brass LGA defeat River Ramos FC of Ekeremor LGA in the finals played at the Nembe City Stadium to lift the Cup.
The competition aims to develop football talents at the grassroots level and enable inter-communal interaction and bring about unity as well as positively engage the youths of the Niger Delta.
Defending champions, Eternal Grace Ministry FC of Yenagoa LGA kicked off their defence of the “Prosperity Cup” against the Bayelsa United Feeder team in the opener of the tournament.
EGM FC last year defeated Odioma FC of Brass 2-1 in a brilliant comeback to lift the trophy.
Director General of the Prosperity Cup, Ono Akpe said that the fifth edition would be more exciting because of the infusion of new ideas purposed to add vitality to the tournament.
Kristina Reports Sports learnt that this year’s edition would be supported by DSTV, Bayelsa State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Bayelsa State Football Association, and the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, among others.
