World Health Day: RSG Calls for Reliance on Science-Based Knowledge

The Rivers State Ministry of Health has called on residents to adopt a more collaborative approach to health by embracing scientifically proven practices aimed at improving overall wellbeing.

This call was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Prof. Justina Jumbo, during a press conference held in Port Harcourt to commemorate this year’s World Health Day, tagged “Together for Health: Stand with Science” .

Prof. Jumbo emphasised that achieving a healthier society requires the collective effort of individuals, families, communities, and government institutions, all working together while relying on evidence-based medical knowledge.

“Science has helped us achieve remarkable progress in health care, from vaccines that protect our children, to medicines that treat diseases and public health practices that prevent outbreaks.

Standing with science means listening to trained health professionals, following proven health guidelines, rejecting misinformation, and supporting vaccinations, hygiene and preventable care.”

She disclosed that the ministry has made significant efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system by engaging well-trained and qualified health professionals across its facilities.

According to her, this is part of ongoing measures to ensure that residents have access to quality and efficient healthcare services.

“The Ministry of Health has employed recently, trained health professionals in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, and Hospital Management Board to attend to the health needs of the citizenry”

The Permanent Secretary urged residents to take full advantage of the available health facilities, stressing the importance of routine medical check-ups, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment in preventing serious health complications.

“We urge you to make health facilities the first point of call whenever health challenges occur”

She further outlined key health guidelines and practical steps that are scientifically tested and proven, encouraging the public to incorporate them into their daily routines to promote healthier lifestyles.

“Proven health guidelines are simple; practical actions that are scientifically tested and proven, such as washing hands regularly with soap and clean water at least 20 seconds, using hand sanitisers, covering of mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, ensuring that children receive all routine vaccinations, reducing salt, sugar and unhealthy fats, including drinking of safe and healthy water”.

Prof. Justina Jumbo reiterated the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding the health of citizens and called for sustained public cooperation in supporting health initiatives across the state.

The theme of this year’s World Health Day is “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” highlights the importance of unity and trust in scientific solutions in addressing health challenges.
