The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to reconnect communities cut off from the Federal Capital City due to a lack of accessible roads.

He explained that previous administrations of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) neglected many roads meant to link satellite towns to the main city.

Minister, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike

“Abuja was created in 1976, and it has been a total disconnect between the city centre and the satellite towns. Ordinarily, we would have had not only one city that is developed but more than two or three cities to discourage people from moving out to congest the main city.

Wike made this known on Tuesday during the construction of a 15-kilometre road from the A2 junction, off Abuja–Lokoja Road, to Pai in the Kwali Area Council.

The road segment, previously overlooked, complements the 18-kilometre Pai–Gomani stretch awarded last October. During the earlier flag-off of the Pai–Gomani road, Wike had promised to award the additional 15-kilometre segment from the A2 junction to Pai, making a total of 33 kilometres from A2 through Pai to Gomani.

The minister noted that since the establishment of the FCT in 1976, insufficient efforts had been made to construct roads connecting satellite towns to the main city.

He assured that the ongoing projects would not be abandoned, attributing this to the strong support of President Tinubu in facilitating infrastructure development to connect communities.

“Be assured that under Mr. President’s tenure, every promise we have made, every project we have started, we will complete all of them. We are not going to abandon any project at all.”

Wike also emphasized that improved road access in rural areas would help tackle insecurity.

“People talk about insecurity because of non-access roads, but with good roads, there won’t be insecurity in communities.

He urged residents to continue supporting President Tinubu’s administration in its drive to deliver infrastructure across the FCT.

“With the renewed hope agenda, I hope all of you understand what the President is doing. What the President is doing through us is to connect the satellite towns to the main city, so that you don’t have to say, let me go and stay in the city.

He also praised the National Assembly members for their cooperation in enabling the FCTA to achieve its goals.
