Residents of Rumuosi Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State are deeply concerned after a truck carrying heavy equipment damaged one of the flyovers on the Port Harcourt Ring Road project that is currently under construction.

This critical infrastructure is part of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s ambitious link road project, entrusted to Julius Berger in the State.

Early this evening, Thursday, June 19, 2024, the route leading to the flyover, from Obiri Ikwerre Flyover down to the construction site, was thrown into chaos as the truck, unable to move after causing damage, blocked the road.

Several commuters were left stranded for hours with nowhere to go as the incident resulted in serious traffic gridlock along the road.

Eyewitnesses and local residents lamented the poor quality of the construction, expressing dismay over the safety implications.

Justice Saturday described the incident as alarming, criticizing the project management for incompetence and raising concerns about potential structural integrity issues leading to a collapse.

“This people are incompetent, why will they construct this kind of low flyover, they just do what they like and nobody questions them.

“This truck couldn’t even pass under this flyover, the truck even cracked the flyover over, what if it falls on people, something they are still working own, this is not fair at all”.

Kpeamaa Austin called for immediate government action, urging the establishment of a panel to rigorously inspect all state projects to ensure they meet high standards.

This incident, he argued, underscores a pattern of incompetence and a lack of regard for public safety.

“What I’m going to say is that the governor of Rivers State should set up a panel that will inspect every project to make sure they deliver a quality one because this isn’t safe for us, another truck will still pass here tomorrow and block this road now knowing that this flyover is this low, what are this people even thinking”.

The ensuing traffic congestion trapped motorists for over two hours, exacerbating frustration among commuters seeking alternative routes.
