Business owners in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State highlighted a complex array of challenges affecting their livelihoods beyond just the electricity situation.

The traders speaking to Kristina Reports during a community tour on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in Okrika highlighted the multifaceted nature of the issue.

Awaji emphasized that besides electricity, fluctuations in the area, dollar exchange rate and fuel prices were significant contributors to the inflation of goods. She noted a shift away from coldroom businesses due to the unreliable power supply, with many resorting to solar energy.

“Before we dey sell chicken lap for N800 or N1000, now I go eleme market, I no even see chicken lap for N1500, I no even bother myself cus if I buy, I go chop am, even fish too. Na God dey help person”.

The dollar hike, she explained, has led to inflated prices, making purchases increasingly difficult for consumers.

Another trader, Hassan, echoed similar sentiments, attributing the decline in sales not solely to inadequate electricity but also to other factors such as rising prices of essentials like ice blocks. He emphasized the necessity of adjusting prices to cover costs, including transportation and procurement expenses.

“I no go fit buy N300 something come still sell for 300, what of my transport, what of my money wey I take buy ice block. So you see am na, na the matter be that”.

Amidst these challenges, an anonymous source lamented the role of humans, stressing the need for honesty and cooperation among traders to alleviate the situation.
