Imagine that you have to go to a church, mosque or hotel to cast your vote during an election, how would you describe the experience? That seems to have been the case for some time now until such voting centres were busted by the electoral umpire.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it discovered 19 illegal polling units in Akwa Ibom State, most of which were variously located in hotels, churches and mosques, among other ridiculous places.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, disclosed this at an Enlarged Stakeholders’ Forum in Uyo on Monday. He said the illegal polling units were in Obot Akara and Uyo Local Government Areas, stressing that such locations were in violation of its guidelines, as such needed to be relocated and renamed.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner of Police, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, pledged the neutrality of the Police to ensure that all forms of intimidation on the electorate were eliminated during and after the exercise.
