In the aftermath of a devastating inferno claiming lives and over 70 vehicles, residents of Eleme local government area in Rivers State voiced their grievances on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the scene to Kristina Reports.

They attributed the tragic outcome to governmental negligence in constructing the federal road, aggravated by assigning the task to an incompetent company.

“If this work was given to Julius Berger, at least we would have seen a better impact. So many companies use this road, not just because they want to, but because they must. It’s a vital artery leading to the Onne sea port,” lamented one resident.

Another resident emphasized the federal nature of the road, stating, “Every vehicle from Onne passes through here daily, yet the road is a mess. Indorama, for instance, benefits from this route while ordinary people suffer. If RCC isn’t up to the task, the contract should be given to a competent company.”

A concerned citizen known as Aboy urged government intervention, asserting, “As taxpayers, we deserve better. Eleme contributes significantly to the state’s revenue, yet our roads are neglected. Our governor must act swiftly to ensure proper construction. If not, more tragedies will occur”.

He pleaded, “Let’s not just expand the road; let’s ensure smooth traffic flow. If the government doesn’t act, we’ll continue to witness loss of lives. Action is needed now”.
