A sociopolitical group, the G-30 Ibani Voice has called on governments at all levels to prioritize the teaching of Mathematics in the Educational Curricula of the country.
It also stated that incentives should be given to Mathematics teachers at all levels as a way of motivating them to do more.
In its view, the subject remains the fulcrum of all other achievements whether in professional careers or business.
Founder and President of the group, Dr Fubara Dan-Jumbo made the call while presenting awards to outstanding students and pupils of selected schools on Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State during the week.
Dan-Jumbo, a former Coventry University lecturer, was represented at the event by the Secretary General of G-30 Ibani Voice, Godswill Hart.
He pointed out that Mathematics was central to every other field of study and as such everything possible should be done to make it attractive to pupils and students.
The pupils and students, who were presented with copies of a book, “Make Yourself A Mathematician”, jointly authored by Fubara Dan-Jumbo, PhD, Nathaniel Longjohn, and S.A. Tola, emerged winners in diverse categories in the Queen & King’s Mathematics Quiz Competition held in July, 2018.
They include Matthew Hart, Bonny National Grammar School (BNGS) UBE; Tamuno-Omubo Queen Esther, Government Girls Secondary School, Finima, Bonny (GGSS) UBE; Iheme Chinedu and Maureen Pepple, Community Secondary School (CSS), Abalamabie, Senior; Emmanuel James Hart, St. Michael’s CAC Primary School, Bonny; Wisdom Emmanuel, Ibi-Tamuno Group of Schools (Primary section), and three best performing Mathematics students drawn from primary, junior and secondary schools, respectively.
He eulogized the awardees for their exceptional performance during the quiz competition, stressing that they have made their schools proud by the feats they have achieved.
In their various responses, Principals of CSS, Abalamabie, Senior, Mr. Brown, GGSS, Finima Bonny, UBE, Bonny, Mr. Idawari Brown, Rev. Lebari Sunday, BNGS, UBE, and Head Teachers of Ibi-Tamuno Group of Schools, Mrs. Salome Jumbo, and St. Michael’s CAC Primary School, Mrs. Awajiibelenyem Manfred, respectively, thanked G-30 Ibani Voice for the kind gesture of rewarding the dexterity, scholarship and hard work of the awardees and, indeed, those of their tutors.
They jointly hoped for the day when teachers’ efforts would be rewarded and recognized.
